Felicia Boswell has won the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Non-Resident Production for her performance as Felicia in the national tour of Memphis. The awards, honoring the best theater in Washington, D.C., were announced on April 9. The tour is currently playing Detroit’s Fisher Theatre and will soon make stops in Miami and Orlando.

Set in the turbulent south in the 1950s, Memphis is the rollicking story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends race lines and airwaves. Thanks in part to his passionate persistence, "race" music explodes throughout mainstream America. But when Huey falls for Felicia, a beautiful black singer he has set on the path to stardom (Boswell), whether the world is really ready for this music, and their love, is put to the test.

In addition to Boswell, the national tour of Memphis includes Bryan Fenkart as Huey, Horace V. Rogers as Delray, Will Mann as Bobby and Rhett George as Gator. Broadway helmer Christopher Ashley directs the production.
